Balancing High School and Part-Time Work

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work
Part 3
Brad Mac Gowan of the Career Center at Newton North High School in Massachusetts thinks that working can be a valuable part of a student’s life, if taken on responsibility. “You can derive a great deal from working, considerably more than just money, “he says.” In most cases, you can acquire a nice a nice dose of discipline and a whole new set of skills and experiences. “In addition, your supervisor may be willing to write strong college recommendations for you.
School comes first.
Schoolwork , including homework and studying for tests, should always be your top priority .McGowan cautions students who do decide to work, “ if you are rushing through your assignments… or not studying enough for tests because of work , it’s time to cut back or quit and find a less time consuming job.”

"What you are will show in what you do"
-Thomas A. Edison

this statement is true because you cant hide the truth forever ,everything eventually comes out and everyone knows it for example if you do something good and dont tell about it someone will eventually find out.
and it goes the same for doing a bad thing .

Balancing high school and part-time work Part 2

Balancing high school and part-time work
Part 2
Voice your goals to someone else can help you make decisions and figure out your priorities . it can also help you judge whether you can do both- work and study – successfully . to help aswer this question , ask yourself:
·       Am I am organized person ?
·       What kind of study habits do I have ?
·       Do I make  good use of my available time ?
·       Will I be able to manage my schedule effectively if I take on a part- time job?
Think about the pros and cons of working. On the plus side, a job can teach you about commitment, time management and responsibilities –and, of course, handling money. On the minus side, a job can cut into the time you have for sleeping, studying and socializing

Balancing High School And Part-Time Work

Balancing High School And Part-Time Work
like many high school students, you may want – or need- to work part time. Working takes a lot of time and energy, though, so before getting a job make sure you think about your ability to handle both work and your education.
Important considerations
You have to weight a number of factors when deciding whether to take on a part- time job. It’s important to get as much information as possible , so you can figure out what choice makes the most sense for you.
Schedule a meeting with your school counselor to discuss the idea of working . talk to your counselour about why you want to work and hat type of position you’re seeking

Many colleges require or recommend one or two semesters in the arts. Good choices include studio art, dance, music and drama. Many students have talents and extraordinary abilities in the arts.
Students should look within their own repertoire of talents and identity their artistic abilities and take college classes to develop their talents.

poem

tis the seat of the snail

ella wheeler wilcox 1916

but to every mind there openeth,
away,and away ,and away
a high soul climbs the higway
and the low soul gropes the low ,
and in between on the misty flats
the rest drift to and fro.
but to every man there openth,
a high abd low,
and every mind decedth
the way his soul should go
one ship sails East
and another West
by the self-same winds that blow
'tis the set of sails
and not the gales
that tells the way we go
like the wind in the sea
are the waves of time
as we journey along through life,
'tis the set of the soul
that determines the goal,
and not the clam or the strife.

Part 1
the academic rigor of your high school courses is an important
factor in the college admission process. College admission officers see your high school courses schedule as a blueprint of your education.they’re looking for a solid foundation ,of learning that you can built on in college.
To create that foundation .take at least five solid academic classes every sememster.start with the basic and then move on to advance courses.challenging yourself is part of what makes school fun; but you need a firm grasp of the fundimentals before going on to more advance work.

The Power of Study Groups

The Power of Study Groups
Part 4
Getting the Most Out of a Session
Here are some tips to help your group get the most out of each study session:
·         Decide what you’re going to do in advance.
·         Prepare for the session, so you can make the most of your time together.
·         Take turns teaching, to reinforce own knowledge.
·         Stick to the session topic.
By supplementing your individual study with a study group, you can reinforce what you’ve learned, deepen your understanding of complex concepts, and maybe even make a few new friends. Remember that a friend is a person who encourages you to do your best and to achieve on a high level, one who pushes you to try a little harder and be a little better. If someone pulls you down the wrong trails of life, then those people are not friends,(they are actually your enemies), and you must avoid them at all cost. Whoever said learning can’t be fun? Learning is enjoyable and exciting when you study with others.

The Power of Study Groups
Part 2
The Benefits of Study Groups
Groups study offers other advantages in addition to gaining a deeper understanding of class material. These include the opportunity to:
Reinforce note—taking. If your AP Biology notes are unclear, you can ask a member of your study group to help you fill the gaps. Share talents. Each person brings different strengths, such as organization.
Cover more ground. Group members may be able to solve a calculus problem together that none would have solved alone.
Benefits from a support system. Members often have common goals, such as good grades. Each person’s work affects the other members, which results is making members supportive of one another. Socialize. It’s more fun to study with others; the give-and-take makes it more interesting. And because it’s more fun, you spend more time studying!

Working Together Helps Everyone
You may have notice that when you’re explaining something you’ve learned to a friend, you begin to understand it betters yourself. This happens because, when you explain an idea, you need think more deeply about it
The same principals make study groups useful. Studying with others in a small group is helpful because you:
Think out loud
Share ideas
Learn from one another

In an effective study group, you and another students hash out lesson materials together-explaining concepts, arguing about them, figuring out why ones persons answer differs from another’s-and in the process, you most likely learn more than you would have studying by yourself

How to Take on College Studying

How to Take on College Studying
Part 2
Choose Where to Study
Where you should study depends on two factors: the environment in which you are best able to concentrate and the type of work you are planning to do.
·         The best places to study have good light, a comfortable temperature and enough desk space—usually your dorm room, your apartment or the library.
·         For completing problem sets or brainstorming possible test questions, you may want to study with a group or at least in a setting where fellow students are available for discussion.
·         When you are reading book chapters or working on a research paper, you are probably better off in a less social environment.
Improve Your Study Habits
Here are simple steps you can take to help you get a handle on studying:
·         Have a routine for where and when you study.
·         Choose reasonable and  specific goals that you can accomplish for each study session.
·         Do things that are harder or require more intense thought at your most productive time of day.
·         Take breaks if you need them so you don’t waste time looking at material but not absorbing it.
·         Get to know students whom you respect and can study with or contact to ask questions.
·         Keep up with the workload and seek help when you need it.

Do the Reading
You need to do more than just read the chapters you are assigned –you’re expected to understand them thoroughly. Here are some tips:
·         Don’t skim. Read all the material carefully.
·         Break up difficult assignments into sections you can digest –chapters, subsections or even paragraphs.
·         Look up any words that you don’t understand.
·         Pause to think about whether you understand the material; ask questions in class about anything that is unclear.
·         Take notes instead of highlighting –this makes you think through and rephrase the key points.
·         Create a summary sheet of what you learned from each assignment you read.
